Note: This kit includes USB3.0 2.5" SATA Shield and Phidisk PhantomKnight 240GB 2.5" SATA III SSD - Preloaded with Raspberry Pi OS

Now, Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is USB Bootable

Yes, you can boot up the Raspberry Pi OS, RetroPie, Ubuntu, or any USB bootable Raspberry Pi Compatible OS through USB 3.0 from SSD storage. Booting the Operating System from SSD offer faster booting and response time, and SSD also offers a better storage controller.

Combining with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, it can be your NAS (Network Attached Storage), Media Server, or simple local cloud server in your home. We have tested the performance of Phidisk PhantomKnight (120GB) using Raspberry Pi Diagnostics:

  • Sequential write speed 297890 KB/sec (target 10000) - PASS, nearly 30 times faster than the target
  • Random write speed 14948 IOPS (target 500) - PASS, nearly 30 times faster than the target
  • Random read speed 13149 IOPS (target 1500) - PASS, nearly 9 times faster than the target

If we compared with 128GB microSD (Phidisk):

Note:

  • Raspberry Pi Diagnosis result depends on many factors (New memory or used memory, interface, SATA interface, USB interface, USB cable, etc). It should be taken as a reference only.
  • The 2.5" SSD SATA III drive is PRE-LOADED with the Raspberry Pi OS, so you can use it with Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the USB3.0 SATA Shield right out of the box (if the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is ready with USB boot).

The USB 3.0 to 2.5-inch SATA expansion board provides a complete storage solution for the newest Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, it supports up to 4TB 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drive (SSD).

Notes:

  • A microSD card is required to configure the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B board to boot from USB as its "root" partition if the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is not updated/upgraded to boot from USB yet.
  • USB 3.0 devices might generate radio frequency interference that can cause Wi-Fi and other wireless devices operating in the 2.4GHz band to have issues communicating with your Raspberry Pi 4 Model B. To avoid interference on the 2.4GHz band using Wi-Fi, try using the 5GHz band instead. If the problem still exists, please turn off WiFi and use the wired network instead.
  • WARNING: DO NOT power your Raspberry Pi via the Pi's 40-pin header and type-C socket at the same time.
  • There are two ways to power up the setup. You can use the standard USB-C power adapter to power the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, together with the shield and the 2.5" SATA SSD.

Is Your Raspberry Pi 4 Model B USB Bootable?

Method 1: If the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the latest version, it is USB Boot Ready :) So just assemble everything and power it up :)

Method 2: Configure the EEPROM from Raspberry Pi OS desktop with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, going into the raspi_config. For example, please follow instruction by leepspvideo:

Method 3: Format a blank microSD card (you need to back up the earlier content in case you have only one microSD card) into FAT32, load the RPi4 EEPROM firmware using Raspberry Pi Imager(download from here). From Operating System->Misc Utility Images->Raspberry Pi 4 EEPROM boot recovery, choose your microSD card and load the image into it:

After the Raspberry Pi Imager loaded the EEPROM firmware into the microSD card, insert it into your Raspberry Pi 4 Model B microSD card slot and power it up. After just 3 seconds, the EEPROM is updated with new firmware and it is ready for USB boot.
