All electronics part will dissipate heat when electron go through it. Normally we will notice this on high power MOSFET and linear voltage regulator, and do not forget the processor. If you look at your desktop computer or laptop, you will notice there is a big heatsink with high speed fan on top of it to cold it down, during operation.

To save power for most of applications, we do not need fan to cold down the processor, a good heatsink is sufficient to help in dissipating the heat.

In normal condition, Raspberry Pi's processor will not heat up to the extend where it kill itself. Even in high processing application, the processor will detect temperature and will reduce the operating speed, further reducing the power used and finally reduce the heat generated. Of course, in such high processing power applications, this heatsink will help to dissipate the heat faster and allow for high speed operation. Of course if you need a fan to cold it further, get the casing that come with brushless fan.

Anyway, this is copper heatsink with the dimension of 14mm x 12mm x 5.5mm is produced for Raspberry Pi CPU and RAM, especially for Raspberry Pi 3 for it high operating speed and quad-core 64-bit processor.  It comes with thermal adhesive at the bottom of heatsink. Applying it is super easy, clean the surface of the IC off any dust or grease, then peel the protective film from the heatsink, press it on top of the IC firmly and you are done.

Note: Raspberry Pi 3 has auto reduce operating speed built in to prevent IC damage due to overheating, but if you need to operate at high speed and long hour, adding heatsink is the most economy and power saving way.
