Nvidia Jetson Orin Nano 8GB Dev Kit offers 80X AI Perf vs Jetson Nano!

AI is no longer a buzzword, there are many examples of AI being applied nowadays. NVIDIA is famous for GPU, and now, its AI solution.

Introduce Jetson Orin Nano, a strong product line in Nvidia's Jetson family of small, powerful computers designed to a power entry-level edge AI applications and devices!

NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano 8GB Dev Kit

What excites us the most is it comes with the NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano 8GB RAM System on Module (SoM), which was launched a few months ago. This new kit comes with the NVIDIA AmpereTM Architecture GPU which consists of 1024 CUDA cores, and 32 Gen 3 Tensor cores. The Jetson Orin Nano SoM also comes with a 6 x ARM Cortex-A78AE core, and 8GB of 128-bit LPDDR5 RAM onboard.

The NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit sets a new standard for creating entry-level AI-powered robots, smart drones, and intelligent vision systems. It also simplifies getting started with the NVIDIA Jetson Orin Nano series. Compact design, numerous connectors, and up to 40 TOPS of AI performance make this developer kit ideal for transforming your visionary concepts into reality.

Jetson Nano B01 vs Jetson Xavier NX vs Jetson Orin Nano 8GB Dev Kit

The latest Jetson Nano Orin has 80X AI performance of than Jetson Nano B01, and nearly double (2X) AI performance of than Jetson Xavier NX. It is the new Baseline Entry level AI Dev kit. What you want to take note of is the hardware video encoding, Jetson Orin Nano does not come with one. However, video encoding can be done with CPU.

The NVIDIA Orin Nano 8GB module on the Nvidia Jetson Orin Nano Developer Kit is a special SoM where it comes with a microSD-card slot (The standalone Orin Nano SoM does not have a microSD-card slot) and is preassembled with a heatsink+fan. The dev kit also includes a 19 V DC power supply brick, also an M.2 Key-E based wireless networking module. The carrier board also comes with 4x USB 3.2 ports for high-speed USB devices, you can utilize it for high-resolution webcams or depth cameras. The USB-C port is meant for data only and device mode, it cannot be used to power the Dev kit.

Besides all the listed goodies, the Jetson Orin Nano 8GB Dev kit also comes with a WiFi + Bluetooth card, preinstalled underneath the carrier board with embedded antennas. The wireless card utilizes the M.2 Key-E slot. In addition to the bootable microSD card slot, two M.2 Key-M NVMe sockets are provided on the underside of the carrier for high-speed storage. In Jetson Orin Nano, the two M.2 Key-M is M.2 2230 and 2280 Key-M NVMe sockets. You need to get the right length of NVMe to make sure you can slot in the socket.

You might need a proper DisplayPort to HDMI converter to get the multimedia output from the dev kit. Slightly different compared to the Jetson Nano B01 dev kit and Jetson Xavier NX dev kit, the Jetson Orin Nano dev kit comes with only DisplayPort (DP1.2+MST). Worry not! our Jetson Orin Nano Basic Kit already included the compatible DisplayPort to HDMI converter or you can get separately, here

Jetson Orin Nano Dev kit is the CSI connectors for the camera modules. Both the CSI-2 connectors are NOT 15-pos 1mm connectors, but instead, they are CSI 22-pos connectors. The good news, this 22-pos connector is the same as the Raspberry Pi Zero series CSI connector. So do get the right FFC cable here.

Thanks to JetsonHack which shows us how to use the Raspberry Pi V2 camera with this latest Jetson Orin Nano Dev Kit.

He also did a detailed article explaining the steps of using the cameras.

In Getting Started with Jetson Orin Nano you need to go through very hassle journey where you need to start with finding power source compatible with Orin Nano input power, need to load JetPack image in SD Card or NVMe SSD(to load JetPack image in NVMe, you need to setup a host machine and not a straightforward task!) and you need to make sure your monitor connect with the right HDMI adapter. The process is not stop until here and we still have long journey to go.

Do not worry, you still can manage to start with Jetson Orin Nano by having our Jetson Orin Nano Basic Kit. This basic kit is very helpful for you to get started, all the items needed already in the kit and you can right away power up your Jetson Orin Nano!
